Traumatic injuries are sudden, severe and require immediate medical attention. These injuries often come out of nowhere and leave victims reeling. According to Orlando Health, the most common types of traumatic injuries are suffered in car crashes and motorcycle accidents, by pedestrians struck by vehicles, and through falls and burns. While most victims of serious injury are not responsible for the trauma they’ve suffered, there are steps people can take to prevent traumatic injuries in these common events.
Car and motorcycle accidents
Preventable automobile accidents happen all too frequently, and these crashes can change lives forever. Fortunately, simple measures can be taken to greatly reduce the risk of serious traumatic injury from an accident. Following these basic guidelines may help save your life and the lives of others:
- Don’t text or talk on your cellphone while driving.
- Obey the speed limit.
- Never take the wheel if you aren’t sober.
- Wear your seat belt and check to make sure your passengers are buckled in.
- Check your mirrors regularly and be on the lookout for other cars, pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Use you turn signal before you turn and make sure it is off after the turn is complete.
Falls
Even falling at ground level can result in serious harm for older adults, causing injury that ranges from bruising to broken bones. Ladder falls are another common cause of trauma, and can cause death. To help prevent falls:
- Keep walkways clear and remove tripping hazards.
- Provide proper lighting throughout all areas of your home.
- Choose shoes that have good traction.
- Have someone spot you when you are using a ladder, and make sure the ladder is securely positioned.
Pedestrian accidents
Florida is one of the highest-risk states for pedestrians in the whole country. When you are walking, you should not assume that drivers always see you or that they will obey traffic rules. It is best to only cross at crosswalks and when you have the walk signal. Wearing bright clothing can help drivers to see you at dawn, dusk or nighttime.
Burns
Third-degree burns cause nerve death and other permanent damage, while second-degree burns often come with extreme pain. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 60 percent of home fire deaths happened in a home that either had no smoke alarm or one that didn’t work. Ensure that your home is equipped with smoke alarms, and check and replace the batteries of each device at regular intervals. Never leave a stove or open flame unattended, and make sure that matches, chemicals and hot liquids are inaccessible to children.
No matter how careful you are in all of these situations, it can be impossible to prevent another person from behaving recklessly.
